Adventure Camp Frequently Asked Questions

1. What qualifications and training does your staff have?

Our professional camp staff has many years of experience in adventure education. All of our camp directors and coordinators are either Columbus area schoolteachers or full time AEC staff.  Crew leaders are required to be high school graduates that are in the process of earning their undergraduate degree.  Training and staff development are an ongoing priority, and all camp personnel go through extensive training prior to camp. In addition, all camp staff have First Aid & CPR certifications and complete a criminal background check along with fingerprinting. Our support staff consists of area high school students; many of them are Adventure Camp graduates. Although the Adventure Camp has the illusion of uncertainty, the activities are extremely safe. We are extremely safety conscious in all aspects of our program both on site and at our other base camp locations.

2. Where is Adventure Camp located?

The Adventure Camp is based at Camp Lazarus, although some camps do travel offsite to locations such as the nearby Alum Creek State Park for activities.  The 260-acre Camp Lazarus is located 8 miles north of I-270 on Route 23, just north of Columbus, at 4422 Columbus Pike Delaware OH 43015.  Our 40 acres support five ropes courses, multiple climbing walls, high elements, the Jungle Nook climbing area for young children, a thirty-five station initiatives course, large shelter areas, a heated lodge, and a field archery range.

3. Do I need to pack a lunch for my child?

No, lunch is always prepared by our special camp chef.  We make sure our meals are nutritious and delivered hot to each particular camp.  When Survivors and Ultimate are on their overnights, campers help prepare their own meals.  With prior notification, arrangements can be made for special diets.

4. How do I know I’m registered or what my child needs to bring each day?

All campers will receive an email confirming their registration for Adventure Camp.  If registering online, campers will download their confirmation packets at the time of registration. Campers who register via mail will receive their confirmation packet within 10 days of receipt. If you have not received your confirmation packet within 10 days, you can download your packet Here.  The camp packet includes all forms for parents to fill out and return by June 15th.  In May you will receive a "What to Bring" list from your camp's coordinator to post on your refrigerator.  If you have questions, call the office at (614) 846-8946 or FAX us at (614) 846-1794.

5. What does a typical camp day involve?

At Adventure Camp, the activities are high powered, and the campers are active all day.  Each child will need lots of energy, for this reason camp is divided into a day camp and a resident camp experience. Our day camps are designed for younger children; they start at 8:00 AM and end at 4:00 PM. This gives everyone a chance to ease into new situations, recharge before the next day's activities, and get a good night’s sleep. Our resident camp experiences are designed for our older campers and offer overnight activities to keep campers engaged.

6. How will my child travel to field trips and off-site base camps?

Transportation for World Travelers is by bus.  Survivors and Ultimate will travel offsite via 15 passenger vans driven by Adventure Camp employees.  All drivers are over the age of 21, screened for safe driving records and have received special training in safely transporting our campers.

7. Will my child be sleeping outside on the overnights?

Some of our camps offer participants the opportunity to experience the great outdoors by sleeping out under the stars.  For these camps, participant overnights will be spent in four to six-person backpacking tents that are divided by gender. Campers will need to bring their own sleeping bag.  Safety is of utmost importance at Adventure Camp; therefore if we experience severe weather all campers will be relocated to a shelter for the evening.

8. Is there financial assistance available to attend Adventure Camp?

Adventure Camp is a non-profit organization, which recognizes that some families might need assistance for their child to experience summer camp.  We have established a scholarship fund – made possible through donations from our generous customers.  To receive a scholarship application or if you would like to make a donation please contact our office at 614.846.8946. We would like to thank those who have donated money to the camp scholarship fund, without them some of our campers would not have been able to attend camp.  THANK YOU!
